Sigma Nu is very dedicated to its philanthropic events. We understand as a brotherhood how inportant it is to give back to the community and learn to serve others that are less forturnate than ourselves.Every year, the Epsilon Epsilon chapter participates in at least two off-campus philanthropy projects, and at least one on-campus philanthropy project. For the off-campus projects, we participate in “Into the Streets” and “The Big Event” philanthropy events, two community wide events that are held each year where Oklahoma State University students are separated into groups to assist Stillwater community residents, organizations, etc. For “The Big Event” we had nearly 80 guys participate, which was the most out of any Greek chapter on campus, and completed 17 different site jobs, which was also a record. For our annual on-campus project, we host “Temple Classic” which is a volleyball tournament for Oklahoma State students and others who sign up to participate. The brotherhood constructs a full sized sand volleyball court on the lawn of the chapter house. This construction project takes large amounts of effort and only a truly dedicated brotherhood could annually accomplish it. In addition to the building of the court the chapter organizes team sign up, puts the tournament brackets together, and provides referees. All the proceeds of the tournament are donated to the Christopher Reeve Foundation. This year we raised over $18,000. Over 95% of our in-house brotherhood participates in “Temple Classic” as well as each of the other philanthropy projects. Importantly, at the conclusion of the tournament, the chapter donates all the sand to other fraternities, Resident Hall Association and to Relay for Life.
In addition to our annual community service participation, our chapter organizes a community-wide blood drive in partnership with the Oklahoma Blood Institute and Oklahoma State University. The drive took place on the 4th floor of the Student Union while the brotherhood informed the students by handing out flyers directly outside the Student Union. The blood drive produced over 400 units of blood. Also, in the last two years the brotherhood has been encouraging growth in our national partnership with Habitat for Humanity here in Stillwater. Weekend volunteers have gone and walked dogs at the shelter and in the fall of 2008 plans for a house building project are being finalized. Along with these projects, our chapter participates in every other house’s philanthropy projects, one being the Alpha Delta Pi 5k Run, in which we have had the highest participation rate the past two years, which results in the sorority donating $100 to the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Finally, in addition to these ongoing philanthropies, the chapter participates in many smaller-scale community service projects. For example, several of our chapter’s brothers participated in the “Relay for Life” OSU charity, which raised money for the American Cancer Society by walking around a track from 7pm to 7am. Before and during the event our members went out in the community and raised money.
